She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, she developed an early interest in acting. Her first choice was to attend Mount Vernon College to study architecture at Washington DC. However, after a few years she decided to leave and explore acting as a profession. She first made her debut in film by playing a part in the film Down Twisted. The actress became well-known after she played the lead part in Scream. The film was enormously successful commercially and earned more than eleven times it's budget. Critics also liked it. In the three sequels it was her turn to reprise the character. After playing the leading role in Friends which was a popular sitcom - her fame soared. She received several nominations and awards for her performance. It ran for 10 years ago. She has also played an important role of a supporting character in the film Mothers and Daughters. She was awarded the TV Guide Award as a result of her portrayal of the character Friends. The Golden Derby Award was also given to her for the part she played in Cougartown.
